Vestibular therapy is a specialized field within physical therapy that pertains to the evaluation and treatment of problems of the vestibular system. The vestibular system includes the inner ear, the areas of the brain that receive information from the inner ears, and the pathways from the inner ear to the brain that affect balance reactions.
Vestibular therapy is appropriate for persons with medical diagnoses such as: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular migraine, peripheral vestibulopathy (low functioning inner ear), Meniere’s disease, and many more. The goal of vestibular therapy is to decrease or alleviate dizziness and improve balance.
You will be cared for, from evaluation through the entire course of care, by a therapist who has specialty training and years of experience in working with persons with vestibular disorders. Our therapists will communicate with your physician about the findings of your vestibular evaluation and plan for treatment.
Working with a specialist will include specialized equipment to aid in treatment. For Vestibular therapy, infrared goggles are used to look for any abnormal eye movements and record them in various test positions to improve accuracy and thoroughness of the examination and to guide treatment.
Vestibular Goggles are infrared goggles used to identify the source of dizziness. This expedites diagnosis and recovery and directs the therapy course of care and medical management. Vestibular Goggles are helpful for conditions including episodic vertigo, positional dizziness, and off balance.
