What is Orthopedic Physical Therapy?

This is the medical specialty involving treating and diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, and diseases to the bone, muscle, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Orthopedic conditions commonly treated include, arthritis, fractures, tendonitis, bursitis, sprains, strains, ruptures, tears, total joint replacement and other surgeries.

Sports Medicine Physical Therapy

Sports Medicine Physical Therapy can assist in recovery for the high school and collegiate athletes as well as the weekend warrior. The physical therapist can help assist in recovery for those who are struggling to get better. The sports medicine team works closely to treat and get you back to game ready condition as safely as possible.

The sports medicine team works to identify and prioritize necessary treatment protocol. The information gained from the initial evaluation is used to create a safe and specific treatment program specific to the patients sport or activity.

The areas targeted include improvement of:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Mobility
  • Core strength
  • Speed and agility
  • Injury prevention

Our therapy services include:

  • After evaluation by the sports medicine physician, a detailed evaluation of strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, core strength, and even biomechanical analysis including gait will be performed by the physical therapist.
  • The interdisciplinary care team will create a treatment program specific to their deficits and to their sport.
  • Return to sport testing for clearance to return to sport in collaboration with the physician.
  • A detailed home exercise program will be provided on the first day, and updated throughout the episode of care with detailed instructions upon discharge.

  • Use of state of the art treatment tools including the AlterG Anti-gravity treadmill and the Blood Flow Restriction Therapy.
    • Blood Flow Restriction Therapy (BFRT) is compliment to traditional physical/occupational therapy. It helps to facilitate maximal muscle activation and to reduce muscle atrophy in post-operative conditions and expedite recovery.

      BFRT is helpful in treating:

      • Soft tissue injuries such as hamstring, quadricep

      • Ankle injuries and calf injuries

      • Bicep strains

      • Tendon ligament injuries including ACL/ PCL repair, MCL/LCL strains, Achilles injuries, medial/lateral epicondylitis, tendonitis

      • Gractures and stress injuries.

    • Alter-G treadmill allows for earlier weight bearing when returning to walking or running. It allows gait analysis and sequencing with video monitoring to help the therapist. It also reduces strain on muscle, tendons, and bones. This allows for quicker recovery with less pain. This advanced treadmill is used for a wide variety of conditions including, return to sports training, walking program, reduce pain, and improve strength and mobility.
