Nursing at Independence Health System: Meet Shannon

Nursing at Independence Health System: Meet Shannon

Shannon Barnes, RN IHSMeet Shannon Barnes, RN at Independence Health System. She has been with the health system for 23 years and currently works at Butler Hospital in the Telemetry Unit.

"We take care of patients prior to them having open heart surgery. This includes, pre and post cardiac procedures such as heart catheterizations, pacemakers, etc. We also take care of acute stroke and pulmonary patients.

I put myself through nursing school at Butler County Community College. No grants, no scholarships, no tuition reimbursement. I went to school full time and worked full time.

I love seeing people recover and being reunited with their families, that's the most rewarding part of my job! I love coming back after a couple days off and seeing someone really sick improving so much. After all these years of working on the hospital's Telemetry Unit, it is amazing I can say I still learn something new each shift I work. Having such an incredible group of healthcare workers on this unit is what makes it the best for us and our community."
