Health Information Exchange

An electronic Health Information Exchange (HIE) allows members of the health care organizations appropriate and secure access to share patient medical information. HIE networks are both local and national organizations that were formed to improve better patient care coordination and outcomes.

Examples of information that can be shared are test results, medications, allergies, clinical notes, and other information vital to the care of the patient. When a patient has services or treatment at an Independence Health System facility, information will be shared with the HIEs, unless the patient specifically opts out of participation while at their appointment.
