In April 2023, Nicole Butler, an employee at Independence Health System, faced a shocking breast cancer diagnosis that transformed her life. Nicole, a 44-year-old Cook Forest resident, initially felt confident about her health after scheduling a routine Women’s Health wellness exam and the first of her preventative mammograms. However, when the results of her mammogram came in, she underwent additional testing, including a stereotactic biopsy. Shortly after the biopsy, Butler received the call that the diagnosis was cancer, and it felt like her world had been turned upside down.
Despite the shock and overwhelming emotions, Butler made a conscious decision to focus on how she would react to this diagnosis. Her immediate concern was for her 19-year-old daughter. “My next thought was that my daughter still needed me,” she said. “Supporting my daughter as she creates a happy, fulfilled life is not something that I’m willing to miss.”
The process that followed was exhausting, filled with tests, consultations, and ultimately a total left mastectomy in July 2023. Butler underwent 15 rounds of chemotherapy and 16 rounds of radiation throughout the following months. Both forms of treatment were completed at the Clarion Hospital Cancer Center, part of Independence Health System. Butler credits her care and recovery to the incredible team at the Clarion Hospital Cancer Center, stating, “I’m so grateful to the entire team at the Clarion Hospital Cancer Center. I am able to share my experience because of their care, patience, dedication, kindness and knowledge.”
As Butler navigated treatment, she also faced mental health challenges, which led her to prioritize her well-being. She decided to focus on quality of life rather than just the physical aspects of recovery. Today, Nicole is cancer-free and committed to continuing her healing journey, with the support of the IHS healthcare team and her loved ones.
