Independence Health System Enhances Lung Cancer Screening Program

Independence Health System Enhances Lung Cancer Screening Program

Butler, PA, Mar. 12, 2025 – Independence Health System’s Butler Memorial Hospital and Clarion Hospital are expanding their lung cancer screening program with enhancements to the Advanced Lung Center (ALC). According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

Low-dose computed tomography (CT) screenings help detect lung cancer early, even in patients without symptoms, leading to better outcomes and more treatment options. The American Lung Association recommends annual screenings for those at higher risk, including those between 50 to 80 years of age, individuals with a 20 pack-year history of smoking (at least 1 pack a day for 20 years, 2 packs a day for 10 years). Additionally, current smokers and individuals who have quit smoking within the past 15 years should also be screened.

“Early detection of lung cancer is crucial for ensuring appropriate and beneficial treatment options,” said George Davliakos, MD, director of cardiothoracic surgery. “We’re eager to continue developing the Advanced Lung Center to enhance accessibility to high-quality care in our community.”

The ALC is staffed by a multidisciplinary team specializing in pulmonology, thoracic surgery, oncology, and radiology. Upon referral, a nurse navigator guides patients through the process by scheduling screenings and answering questions. If lung cancer is detected, the team collaborates to determine the best treatment plan, working closely with the patient’s primary care provider. If no abnormalities are found, patients are reminded to return annually for follow-up screenings. Combined, Butler Memorial and Clarion Hospital perform approximately 2,400 low-dose CT scans each year.

Last summer, Butler Memorial Hospital installed the Siemens SOMATOM FORCE® dual-source CT scanner, further advancing the facility’s advanced imaging technology. The new scanner features 4D and dual- energy spectral imaging, delivering high accuracy with low radiation doses for information-rich functional images. With freeze motion technology, the scanner enables technologists to perform an entire chest, abdomen and pelvis study on an adult in just one second, benefiting patients who have trouble holding their breath.
