GREENSBURG, PA, Feb. 19, 2025 … Independence Health System (IHS) today unveiled Westmoreland Hospital’s Outpatient Pharmacy in a new, more central location to serve the pharmaceutical and well-being needs of the hospital and community. The pharmacy will fill prescriptions, provide over-the-counter medications, and offer convenience items for patients discharged from same-day procedures, their families accompanying them, hospital employees, and the surrounding neighborhoods.
“Westmoreland Hospital is performing modern and complex lifesaving procedures daily. The main lobby did not accurately represent the inspiring work the providers and staff were doing,” said Michael Sekhon, vice president of Ancillary Services, Administration, Independence Health System. “Reimagining the entryway of the hospital, which includes moving the outpatient pharmacy front and center, is exciting and reiterates our focus on improving convenience for patients, their families, and our employees.”
In addition to providing medications, the pharmacy will stock dietary-related items, grab- and-go snacks such as sandwiches, ice cream, and drinks, as well as popular Independence Health System apparel. As part of the retail experience, the pharmacy will host a new addition to the hospital — a scratch-off lottery machine. There are also plans for expanded inventory.
"Recently, both locally owned and chain pharmacies have closed in the Westmoreland area, resulting in reduced access to critical medications," said Jeff Steinmetz, manager, Westmoreland Hospital Pharmacies, Independence Health System. “Our goal of this facility is to provide a central location with greater accessibility to pharmaceutical care and other items patients and community members need to live healthy lifestyles and receive efficient care.”
Westmoreland Hospital will still maintain Meds to Beds — a program where patients’ filled prescriptions can be delivered bedside at the time of discharge.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held earlier today.
The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 724-832-4255. It is located at 532 West Pittsburgh Street, Greensburg.
