Transitional Year Residency

Curriculum for Transitional Year Residents
- 4 weeks of Emergency Medicine
- 4 weeks of Family Medicine
- 8 weeks of inpatient Internal Medicine
- 4 weeks of Women’s Health
- 6 weeks of Night Float
- 4 weeks of Cardiology
- 12 weeks of Elective time
- 2 weeks of Radiology/Emergency Ultrasound
- 4 weeks of Palliative Care
- 4 weeks of General Surgery
Residents are allocated 12 weeks of elective time during their Transitional
Year. They have the option to complete up to 4 weeks of this elective
time at any location worldwide, provided it is under the supervision of
a physician licensed in the respective jurisdiction. The remaining 8 weeks
must be completed within Independence Health System.
All Transitional Year Residents participate in a continuity clinic at BHS
Rural Health Clinic - New Bethlehem. Residents spend one half day per
week at the office seeing patients.
In accordance with ACGME standards, all rotations must be either 2 or 4
weeks in duration.
Independence Health System – Clarion Hospital’s Benefit Package Includes
- Salary: $54,860
- $1,000 sign-on bonus issued after the first month of service
- A hospital issued laptop computer for use during residency.
- COMLEX Step 3/USMLE Level 3 fee. Per ACGME guidelines all Transitional
Year residents must take the exam prior to completing the transitional
year program.
- State training license fee
- National/state association dues: POMA; AMA; AOA
- Malpractice Insurance
- Health, dental and vision for self and eligible dependents: Premiums are
deducted from your salary
- Meal allowance $175 monthly
- $100 pharmacy allowance to be used for prescriptions or FSA eligible items
- $1,000 dducational allowance to be used for educational expenses such as
textbooks, CME conferences, board review question banks.
- 20 paid time off days
- 2 days off to take the boards
- 5 interview days in the event you do not advance match
- 3 personalized white coats
- 3 sets of scrubs

Eligibility for Appointment at Independence Health System Clarion Hospital
All applicants to the Independence Health System – Clarion Hospital
must meet any of one of the following criteria in order to be considered
for training:
- Be a fourth-year student or graduate of a medical school accredited by
the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or the American Osteopathic
Association.

Be a fourth-year student or graduate of a foreign medical school.
- Applicants must hold a currently valid certification from the Educational
Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment
Additionally, applicants must:
- Pass the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 or the COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2
- Be eligible to obtain a medical training license in Pennsylvania.
